Universities and Colleges show innovation with the National Vehicle Number Plate Project

Selected colleges and universities around the country started the production of number plates earlier this year following a directive by the Government as they aim towards reaching the country’s self-sufficiency.

According to Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) about 170 000 vehicles on the country’s roads are not registered. Also, Zimbabwe’s number plates are imported and require foreign currency hence this initiative is expected to help decrease shortages and save foreign currency whilst creating employment opportunities for locals.

“Zimbabwe has the capability to produce new number plates and develop a modern vehicle registration system that will save us foreign currency, utilise local resources and skills. The project has started and people are working on it.” Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Amon Murwira said.

Prof. Murwira also mentioned that the initiative is a part Education 5.0 and will work towards easing vehicle number plate shortages, reduce foreign currency demand and enhance the country’s own national capabilities.

The University of Zimbabwe and Great Zimbabwe University are part of the universities that are working hand in hand with Government in this project through their innovation hubs.
