ZIMBABWE TO MANUFACTURE ITS OWN VACCINES

By Staff Reporter

With COVID-19 continuing to wreak havoc globally, the latest being the Omicron strain which was first reported in South Africa, Zimbabwe has joined a host of nations that are manufacturing COVID-19 vaccines.

The development has seen a local company  implementing the first phase of its vaccine trials.

Infectious disease physician and vaccine immunologist Dr Tariro Makadzange said the vaccine is a simple protein, and its construct is based on modeling the hepatitis vaccine which generates strong antibody responses from the body.

Dr Makadzange added that the initiative will advance the development of science in the country as well as provide the much needed solution to the  COVID-19 pandemic.

Yesterday, over four thousand people tested positive to COVID-19 around Zimbabwe, creating a need for a home grown solution that is more accessible and less expensive.
